Forty roads around Bangkok’s Rattanakosin Island are being closed this afternoon (Wednesday) for rehearsals leading up to the May coronation of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn.

The 4pm to 9.30pm closures will allow a test run for security and traffic-directing measures. To minimise congestion, Rajadamnoen Avenue, Sanam Chai, Maharat, Khaosan, Samsen, Lan Luang, Ban Mor, Charoen Krung and other roads would only be closed in sections when the procession was passing through, according to the traffic police’s Maj Gen Jirasan Kaeosaeng-ek.

Roads would reopen when the rehearsal had finished.

He urged motorists to use alternative routes like the Yommarat toll, the Krungthon (Sang Hee) Bridge, Rama 8, Phra Pok Klao Bridge or Memorial bridges.

Jirasan invited people to call the traffic division hotline at 1197 or visit www.trafficpolice.go.th for more information.

The coronation of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn will run between May 4-6.
