Man with chainsaw storms Government House over unpaid wages

Suspect claimed unfair pay for state hospital construction work

A furious man armed with a chainsaw caused chaos outside Government House this morning, demanding justice over unpaid wages linked to a state hospital construction project.

The drama unfolded at 8.20am today, June 12, when 53 year old Chalerm, from Nan province, stormed Gate 4 of Government House in Bangkok. Wearing an orange reflective vest and gripping a buzzing electric saw, he attempted to force his way into the compound, sending civil servants, police officers, and bystanders fleeing in panic.

Security personnel quickly erected metal barriers and began negotiating with Chalerm, urging him to stand down. After a tense standoff, officers were able to subdue him and escorted him to the Government House Complaint Centre for further talks.

According to reports, Chalerm has a history of similar protests. Officials revealed that he has repeatedly attempted to confront senior figures at Government House, claiming he was unfairly compensated for work related to the construction of a state hospital.

This is not the first time Chalerm has taken his grievances to extremes. During the tenure of former Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, he was involved in another dramatic protest, scaling a tree beside the Government House fence and climbing onto the roof of the police guard building.

There, he held up a protest sign, forcing police into lengthy negotiations before he agreed to come down, reported Thairath.

Today’s incident reignited concerns about public access to high-security government areas and raised questions about how unresolved grievances are handled.

Chalerm’s protest underscores the deep frustrations felt by many workers over what they view as systemic neglect and unfair treatment by state officials. As the investigation continues, Government House officials have not yet commented on the validity of his claims or the status of his compensation case.

Officials say Chalerm will undergo questioning, and further security measures around Government House are likely to be reviewed following the incident.
