Bangkok garment business owner found dead amid financial woes

A 49 year old garment business owner was found dead yesterday in the bathroom of his four-storey residence in Bangkok’s Bang Khun Thian district.
Police Colonel Korawik Suphatat from the Bang Khun Thian Police Station received the report of the incident, which occurred yesterday, April 2, in a house on Soi Bang Bon 1, Soi 19, Bang Bon 1 Road. Emergency services, forensic officers, and a medical team from Siriraj Hospital were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, the police and volunteers discovered the victim, Winai, lying on his back in a pool of blood in the third-floor bathroom. He was wearing a blue T-shirt and grey shorts, with no shoes.
Despite attempts by volunteers to administer CPR, he did not survive. Blood was visibly present around his chest and back.
A 9mm handgun was found near his left foot, while a green plastic chair was placed near his right foot. On the chair, there was a gun holster and a yellow lighter.
A bullet was found embedded in the cement floor near the bathtub, which police collected as evidence for further investigation.
Winai’s 36 year old brother, Jack, recounted that he heard a gunshot after Winai went into the bathroom. Jack, who was in the house with his brother, knocked on the bathroom door and called out to him.
Upon entering, he found Winai struggling to breathe and immediately contacted Winai’s wife and emergency services. According to Jack, Winai had not previously complained of any issues, only mentioning a stomach ache before heading to the bathroom.
Preliminary inquiries with Winai’s wife and close associates revealed that Winai ran a garment business and had been facing cash flow issues. He had resorted to borrowing money outside the official financial system to sustain his business.
This financial strain might have contributed to his stress, leading to his tragic decision. Winai’s wife expressed no suspicion regarding the cause of his death, reported KhaoSod.
The police and forensic team conducted a thorough investigation of the scene, finding no signs of struggle or disturbance. However, they intend to test for gunpowder residue on Jack’s hands and fingerprints to compare with the weapon found, ensuring complete transparency, as Jack was alone with Winai at the time of the incident.
