Airport arrest: Chinese murder suspects nabbed in Thailand

Two Chinese nationals wanted for murder in Hong Kong were arrested at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport on Wednesday evening, January 22, as they attempted to flee justice.

The suspects, identified as Yau Shu-Ko Enoch and Shimeobi Chinedu Nelson, are accused of committing a fatal crime in Hong Kong earlier that day. According to Police Major General Choengron Rimphadee, commander of Immigration Bureau 2, the crime occurred at approximately 5.30am on Wednesday. The arrests were triggered by an Interpol alert received by Thailand’s Immigration Bureau, sparking swift action from local police.

Immigration police apprehended the pair at around 6.40pm, denying them entry under the Immigration Act. The duo was taken to a detention facility while arrangements were made for their extradition.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region police arrived in Thailand to take custody of the suspects at 1pm yesterday, January 23, reported Bangkok Post.

In a related story, a Chinese national accused of public fraud has been extradited from Thailand to China in relation to a case involving over 112 million yuan (approximately US$15.3 million or 540 million baht). The suspect was transferred to Shanghai Economic Police at Suvarnabhumi International Airport and subsequently boarded a flight to China on Thursday, January 16, confirmed Thitiwadee Sintawanarong, a public prosecutor at the Foreign Affairs Division of the Office of the Attorney-General (OAG).

In 2021, an Italian man, a known associate of a major mafia network, was arrested in Bangkok after living in Thailand under a false identity. Interpol had issued a Red Notice for his involvement in drug smuggling, extortion, and organised crime in Europe. Thai police used the suspect’s biometric data to confirm his identity, leading to his arrest. The suspect was extradited to Italy, where he faced lengthy legal proceedings.

In 2020, a French fugitive wanted for a series of high-profile bank robberies across Europe was captured on the popular tourist island of Koh Samui. The arrest followed Interpol’s intelligence, which pinpointed the suspect’s location. Thai police worked discreetly to arrest the individual without endangering locals or tourists. The suspect was extradited to France to stand trial for multiple charges of theft and armed robbery.
