Weather chaos set to slam 46 Thai provinces

Heavy rains spark growing concerns over flash flooding

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) sounded the alarm for a whopping 46 provinces, with the heavens set to open up over 60% of the land. And yes, Bangkok is in for a soaking too. As the calendar flips to May 21, residents are urgently advised to brace themselves for torrential downpours and all the pesky hazards that come with them.

The TMD forecasts that the southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea and western Thailand, along with southeasterly and southern winds in lower northern, northeastern, central, eastern, and eastern southern Thailand will result in heavy rain in some areas. Residents are urged to remain cautious of severe rainfall and accumulation, which could lead to flash floods and forest runoff, especially in hilly areas and lowlands.

In the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand, weak winds are expected, with waves around 1 metre high in the Andaman Sea and less than 1 metre in the Gulf of Thailand. However, areas experiencing thunderstorms may see waves exceeding 2 metres. Mariners are advised to navigate cautiously and avoid sailing in storm-affected regions.

Between May 23 and May 27, Thailand will experience increased rainfall and heavy to very heavy rain in certain areas. This is due to the strengthening southwest monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, along with a monsoon trough across upper Thailand and southern regions.

Residents in these areas should be vigilant of the risks posed by heavy rainfall and accumulation, which could result in sudden flooding and forest runoff, particularly in hillside and lowland areas.

It is recommended to avoid travelling through regions experiencing thunderstorms and routes prone to recurrent flooding, especially low-lying areas that may face short-term flooding. Farmers are advised to reinforce their fruit crops and prepare for potential damage to agricultural produce and livestock.
