Thailand braces for severe weather with thunderstorms in 51 provinces
Rain-soaked terrain primed for flash flood as skies darken

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a weather warning for May 18, predicting thunderstorms across Thailand, with heavy rain expected in 51 provinces, including Bangkok. Residents should be cautious of potential flash floods and forest runoff, especially in regions near mountain slopes and water flow paths.
The forecast attributes these conditions to southeasterly and southerly winds covering the lower northern, northeastern, central regions, Bangkok, and nearby areas. Additionally, the southwest monsoon affects the Andaman Sea and western Thailand.
Moderate winds are expected in the Andaman Sea, with wave heights of 1 to 2 metres, rising over 2 metres during thunderstorms. Seafarers in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea are advised to navigate cautiously and avoid stormy areas.
In northern Thailand, thunderstorms are anticipated in 70% of the region, with heavy rainfall in provinces such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Lampang. Temperatures range from 23 to 36 degrees Celsius, with southwesterly winds at 5 to 15 kilometres per hour.
Northeastern areas, including Loei and Udon Thani, will also see similar conditions with temperatures between 23 and 36 degrees Celsius, accompanied by southeasterly winds at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
Central Thailand will experience thunderstorms in 60% of the area, primarily in Nakhon Sawan and Uthai Thani, with temperatures ranging from 24 to 36 degrees Celsius and southerly winds at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
Eastern regions, including Nakhon Nayok and Chon Buri, are also forecasted to have thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with heavy rain in some parts. Temperatures are expected between 24 and 34 degrees Celsius, with southeasterly winds at 15 to 30 kilometres per hour. In stormy conditions, waves may exceed 2 metres in height.
In south Thailand (eastern coast), 60% of the area may experience thunderstorms, especially in provinces like Phetchaburi and Surat Thani. Temperatures will range from 24 to 35 degrees Celsius, with southeasterly winds at 15 to 30 kilometres per hour.
In south Thailand (eastern coast) will also see thunderstorms in 60% of the area, particularly in Ranong and Phuket, with temperatures between 24 and 34 degrees Celsius and southwesterly winds at 15 to 35 south Thailand (eastern coast). Wave heights may reach 1 to 2 metres, increasing to over 2 metres during storms, reported KhaoSod.
