Thailand braces for severe thunderstorms and strong winds

Severe weather looms as flash flood risk rises in northern and southern provinces

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning for thunderstorms across Thailand, with the north and south regions expected to face the heaviest downpours.

Residents are advised to be cautious of strong winds and heavy rain, particularly in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, where waves could reach up to 2 metres.

In the next 24 hours, an area of low pressure over northern Laos and Vietnam, combined with the prevailing southwesterly monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, is anticipated to cause thunderstorms in the upper regions of Thailand.

Provinces like Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, and Bueng Kan should prepare for potentially severe weather conditions.

Mariners in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are urged to exercise caution, especially in stormy areas where waves may exceed 2 metres.

The weather forecast from 6am today to 6am tomorrow predicts thunderstorms across 60% of the northern region, with heavy rain expected in provinces such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Tak, and Kamphaeng Phet. Temperatures in this region will range from 23°C to 36°C, with southwesterly winds at speeds of 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
