Thai downpour leaves 57 provinces singing in the rain

Flood prep intensifies as disruptions loom

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) sounded the alarm, forecasting a bleak outlook for 57 provinces, including Bangkok, as a looming depression threatens to drench the nation. Residents should ready themselves for potential flash floods and mountain runoffs, with a torrent of heavy rain set to arrive today, June 10.

For the upcoming 24 hours, thunderstorms and heavy rain are forecasted for regions, especially in north, northeast, east, and southern west Thailand. The TMD urges caution in these areas due to the risk of flash floods and accumulated rainfall, particularly in hilly areas and near waterways.

Farmers are advised to prepare for possible agricultural damage. This weather pattern is influenced by a monsoon trough across the upper north and northeast, accompanied by a strong southwestern monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, the south, and the Gulf of Thailand.

The Department of Mineral Resources issued warnings for two regions at risk of landslides and mountain runoffs due to heavy rain. Weather conditions today will see 61 provinces experiencing 60 to 80% heavy rainfall.

The Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand are expected to have strong wind and waves, reaching 2 to 3 metres and over 3 metres in stormy areas. The Gulf of Thailand will see waves between 1 and 2 metres, exceeding 2 metres during storms.

Mariners in these areas should exercise caution, avoid sailing in stormy conditions, and small boats in the Andaman Sea and upper Gulf should remain ashore until June 13. Meanwhile, a tropical depression in the upper South China Sea may intensify into a tropical storm but is not expected to enter Thailand.

Weather forecasts

The north will see thunderstorms and heavy to very heavy rain in provinces such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26°C to 32 to 36°C with southwesterly winds of 5 to 15 kilometres per hour.

The northeast will have similar conditions, with heavy rainfall in Loei and Nong Khai, among others. Temperatures are expected to be 23 to 26°C, with 30 to 35°C and winds at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.

The central region will experience thunderstorms in 60% of the area, with heavy rain expected in provinces like Nakhon Sawan and Lop Buri. Temperatures will range from 24 to 26°C to 33 to 35°C with southwesterly winds of 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.

In the east, 70% of areas will see thunderstorms, with significant rain in Nakhon Nayok and Prachin Buri. Temperatures will range from 25 to 28°C to 29 to 34°C, and the sea will have waves of 2 to 3 metres, exceeding 3 metres in storms.

The southern east coast will have 60% thunderstorms, with heavy rain in Chumphon and Surat Thani. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26°C to 33 to 35°C, with winds of 15 to 35 kilometres per hour.

The southern west coast will see 80% thunderstorms with heavy rainfall in Ranong and Phang Nga. Temperatures will range from 24 to 25°C to 30 to 32°C, with waves reaching 2 to 3 metres, exceeding 3 metres in storms.

Bangkok and surrounding areas will experience 60% thunderstorms with some heavy rain. Temperatures will be 26 to 27°C to 32 to 35°C, with southwesterly winds of 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.

At 5pm, a depression was centred 570 kilometres southeast of Hainan Island, moving west-northwest slowly, with a maximum wind speed of 55 kilometres per hour. It is expected to intensify into a tropical storm, passing Hainan’s east and entering southern China between June 13 and June 14, weakening subsequently.

Although it won’t affect Thailand directly, it may intensify the southwestern monsoon over Thailand, increasing rainfall and wind strength in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand.
