Heavy rains and flash flood warnings issued for Thailand

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a warning for heavy rains and potential flash floods across most regions of the country, with Bangkok expected to experience rain in 60% of its area.

The TMD forecasts that the southwest monsoon will cover the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, creating conditions ripe for thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in certain regions. A low-pressure area over northern Vietnam is also contributing to these conditions. The public is advised to be cautious of potential flash floods and forest runoffs, particularly in mountainous areas and low-lying regions near waterways.

On the Andaman Sea, moderate winds are expected, with waves reaching 1 to 2 metres high, and even higher in areas experiencing thunderstorms. Similarly, the lower Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand will see waves about 1 metre high, rising further during thunderstorms. Mariners are advised to navigate carefully and avoid areas with thunderstorms.

Northern Region: Thunderstorms are predicted in 40% of the area, with heavy rain in some parts, especially in Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun provinces. Temperatures will range from 23 to 27 degrees Celsius at the lowest and 32 to 36 degrees Celsius at the highest.

Northeastern Region: Thunderstorms are expected in 60% of the area, with heavy rain in places such as Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Sisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani. The region will experience temperatures between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius at the lowest and 32 to 35 degrees Celsius at the highest.

Central Region: The forecast predicts thunderstorms in 60% of the area with heavy rain in some places, particularly in Lopburi, Saraburi, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Nakhon Pathom, and Samut Sakhon provinces. Temperatures will range from 24 to 26 degrees Celsius at the lowest and 34 to 36 degrees Celsius at the highest.

Eastern Region: Thunderstorms are anticipated in 70% of the area, with very heavy rain in certain parts, particularly in Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat provinces. Temperatures will vary between 23 and 27 degrees Celsius at the lowest and 30 to 35 degrees Celsius at the highest. The sea will have waves about 1 metre high, rising higher during thunderstorms.

Southern Region (East Coast): Thunderstorms are forecasted for 40% of the area, mainly in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat provinces. Temperatures will be between 23 and 26 degrees Celsius at the lowest and 33 to 35 degrees Celsius at the highest. The sea will have waves about 1 metre high, with higher waves during thunderstorms.

Southern Region (West Coast): Thunderstorms are expected in 60% of the area with heavy rain in some places, especially in Ranong and Phang Nga provinces. Temperatures will range from 24 to 26 degrees Celsius at the lowest and 31 to 34 degrees Celsius at the highest.

The sea will have waves between 1 and 2 metres high, and higher waves during thunderstorms, particularly from Phuket upwards. From Krabi downwards, the sea will have waves about 1 metre high, rising higher during thunderstorms, reported KhaoSod.
