Heavy rainfall forecast for 46 Thai provinces including Bangkok

Flash flood fears grow with continued rainfall

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has forecasted heavy rainfall for 46 provinces, including Bangkok, covering 60% of the area today, May 22.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected in the eastern and western southern regions, including Bangkok and its vicinity. Residents in these areas are advised to be cautious due to the ongoing southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.

The waves in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are expected to be mild, with heights of approximately 1 metre in the Andaman Sea and less than 1 metre in the Gulf. However, during thunderstorms, wave heights could exceed 2 metres. Therefore, sailors in these regions are urged to navigate cautiously and avoid stormy areas.

From May 23 to May 27, rainfall is likely to increase across Thailand, with some areas experiencing very heavy rain. This is due to the strengthening of the southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, combined with a monsoon trough over upper Thailand and the upper southern region.

Residents in these areas should be prepared for potential flash floods and water runoff, especially in foothill areas near waterways and lowlands.

Those in low-lying areas should avoid travelling through stormy areas and flood-prone routes. Farmers are encouraged to reinforce their fruit trees and take preventive measures against possible damage to crops and livestock.
