Monsoon system sparks flood risk and rough seas in southern regions

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a weather warning for today, forecasting thunderstorms and heavy rain across 35 provinces, including Bangkok and its surrounding areas.

Residents are advised to be cautious due to the risk of heavy and accumulated rainfall.

The current weather conditions are influenced by a monsoon trough passing over the lower northern, central, eastern, and northeastern regions, along with a moderate southwest monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea, the South, and the Gulf of Thailand.

The upper Andaman Sea is expected to experience moderate winds with waves between 1 and 2 metres. In the lower Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, waves are anticipated to reach about 1 metre, but could exceed 2 metres in areas with thunderstorms. Seafarers are advised to navigate with caution, particularly avoiding areas with thunderstorms.

In northern Thailand, thunderstorms are expected to cover 60% of the region, particularly in the provinces of Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Tak, Phitsanulok, Phichit, and Phetchabun. Temperatures will range from a low of 22 to 25°C to a high of 31 to 35°C, with variable winds at 5 to 15 km/h.

The northeastern region will also experience thunderstorms in 60% of the area, with heavy rain in Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Surin, Sisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani. Temperatures will range from 23 to 25°C at the lower end to 32 to 34°C at the upper end, with variable winds at 10 to 15 km/h.

Central Thailand, including Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon, and Samut Songkhram, will see thunderstorms covering 70% of the area with some heavy rain. Temperatures will range from 23 to 25°C at the lowest to 33 to 35°C at the highest, with variable winds at 10 to 15 km/h.

Thunderstorms will cover over 70% of the area of the eastern region, with heavy rain in Sa Kaeo, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat. Temperatures will range from lows of 23 to 26°C to highs of 30 to 34°C. Southwesterly winds will blow at 15 to 30 km/h, causing waves of approximately 1 metre, rising to over 2 metres in stormy areas.

The east coast in the South will see thunderstorms across 70% of the area, with heavy rain in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. Temperatures will range from lows of 23 to 25°C to highs of 32 to 34°C. Southwesterly winds will reach speeds of 15 to 30 km/h. Sea waves will reach about 1 metre and higher in stormy areas.

On the west coast, thunderstorms will cover over 60% of the area, with heavy rain in Krabi, Trang, and Satun, according to KhaoSod.

Temperatures will range from 23 to 25°C at the lowest to 30 to 33°C at the highest.

For Bangkok and its vicinity, thunderstorms are expected over 70% of the area with some heavy rain. Temperatures will range from lows of 25 to 27°C to highs of 33 to 35°C, with southwesterly winds blowing at 10 to 15 km/h.
