A man attempted to steal a taxi he hired while en route to Nakhon Ratchasima, leading to a crash with a container truck. The incident occurred today, February 10, at 5.30am, prompting police to review CCTV footage to locate the suspect.

Emergency services and officers from the Sawang Rattanatrai Thammasathan Foundation responded to the scene, finding a white GAC brand taxi, licensed in Bangkok and part of the Kan Kanaphisek Taxi Cooperative. The taxi’s front was severely damaged, with airbags deployed, obstructing traffic on the road.

The taxi driver, identified only as Tua, sustained minor head injuries and received first aid at the scene. Nearby, a container truck licensed in Nakhon Ratchasima and driven by 38 year old Somkiat was parked by the roadside. The truck suffered minor scratches on its rear bumper.

Tua explained that he was hired from a shopping mall in the Rama 2 area to transport a passenger to another mall in Nakhon Ratchasima for 3,000 baht (US$90). The passenger’s relative negotiated the fare down to 2,600 baht (US$77), which Tua accepted.

During the journey, the passenger revealed his intention to steal the vehicle, instructing Tua to get out of the taxi. Tua attempted to stall by saying he needed to charge the taxi but the passenger grabbed the steering wheel, causing the vehicle to lose control and crash into the truck. The suspect then fled on foot.

Somkiat, the truck driver, recounted returning from Khlong Toei Port when he felt an impact on his truck’s rear. Upon inspection, he discovered the taxi had collided with it, reported KhaoSod.
