Sing Buri U-turn crash: Van hits trailer, six injured

A collision at a U-turn in Sing Buri province involved a passenger van crashing into a trailer truck, resulting in six injuries.

Passengers reported unusual brake behaviour before the incident. The accident occurred yesterday, April 2, at 8.30pm, along kilometre marker 70 on the southbound Asia Highway in Ban Mo subdistrict, Phrom Buri district.

Police Lieutenant Chaiwat Phanon, an investigator with Phrom Buri Police Station, confirmed the accident, which caused significant traffic congestion, stretching approximately 2 kilometres. The crash site was on a three-lane road where only one lane was operational.

A Toyota van, registered in Bangkok, sustained severe front-end damage, particularly on the driver’s side, with seats ejected from the vehicle. Five passengers were injured.

Emergency services quickly used hydraulic cutters to free the six male passengers and the driver, transporting them to Phrom Buri Hospital. Nearby, a two-trailer truck, fully loaded, was parked on the roadside with damage to its lower beam.

Thanasan, a 39 year old driver of another trailer truck, revealed that he was following the trailer involved in the accident. He was en route to deliver goods to a company, and upon approaching the U-turn, he noticed that both southbound lanes had stopped. The trailer ahead was nearly through the turn when the van collided with the trailer’s rear.

The truck driver, 28 year old Yongyut, was too shaken to provide any comments. The six injured people included Sithichai, who was not seriously hurt; Somkhuan, with scrapes on his left ankle and nose; Nakrob, who had a broken front tooth; Winai, who suffered a right shoulder injury; Arnon, with scrapes on both legs, his forehead, and right shoulder pain; and Nithikorn, the van driver, who sustained a broken right leg.

Somkhuan, a factory worker, explained that the van was transporting workers from Inthra Industrial Estate, In Buri district to Pho Thong district in Ang Thong. He recounted that the van was in the centre lane when he noticed the brakes behaving unusually, prompting him to look up and see the trailer making a U-turn before their van crashed into it, reported KhaoSod.

Police recorded the incident and both parties have since contacted their insurers to settle damage claims.
