Hair-raising heist: Duo snips 12,000 baht from elderly man in Thailand

Two women posed as buyers to steal 12,000 baht from an 84 year old man in Phetchabun province. On April 8, the pair distracted the elderly man while one pretended to use the bathroom and stole money he had saved from haircuts and selling woven goods.

The incident occurred at around 12am, when the homeowner, Lop Sonkaew, was assisting relatives nearby. Before leaving, he locked his front door and asked 78 year old Kun Raksasi, a neighbour, to keep an eye on the house.

When Lop returned home after cutting a customer’s hair, he discovered the money missing from his waist pouch and the back door, previously tied shut with rope, open.

Kun recounted that two women, between 40 and 50 years old, arrived on a motorcycle, asking to buy sticky rice containers. She told them none were for sale, but one woman insisted and asked to use the bathroom.

Kun allowed her to do so, as it was outside the house. While the first woman went to the back, the other engaged Kun in conversation.

After a short while, the woman pretending to use the bathroom returned, and both women left on their motorcycle without a word. Shortly after, a customer arrived for a haircut, prompting Lop to return home and discover the theft.

Lop revealed that he had saved the stolen money from cutting hair, selling woven products, and collecting leaves for sale. He expressed deep regret over the loss, stating it left him with only 140 baht (US$4) in total. The incident left him distressed and unable to sleep, reported KhaoSod.

Police are investigating surveillance footage from a nearby camera, which captured two women wearing cloaks and helmets arriving at Lop’s house around the time of the theft. Police are actively pursuing the suspects for further investigation and legal action.
