BRN operative arrested in Yala for planned January attack
Police apprehended a Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) operative involved in a 2017 bombing incident while he was hiding in Than To district, Yala province. The suspect confessed to entering the village with plans to attack yesterday, January 6.
Police received reports from locals about a suspicious man blending in with residents in the Mueang 6 Santi 2 village, Mae Wat subdistrict, Than To district, Yala province. Following the tip-off, security personnel conducted an investigation, leading to the arrest of Abirin Sa, identified as an operative member of the BRN.
Upon interrogation, it was revealed that Abirin had a history of involvement in multiple incidents. On September 14, 2017, he planted a bomb targeting the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team in Yaha district, Yala province.
This attack resulted in injuries to 17 officers and the death of one, along with two civilians injured. Additionally, on January 22, 2016, he was involved in the shooting of a local couple, Doromae and Amine, and the shooting of Usman, the assistant village headman of Mueang 6 Baro, Yaha district, Yala province, reported KhaoSod.
Abirin confessed during questioning that he entered the village to prepare for another attack. He has been sent to a questioning centre for further interrogation to expand on these findings.
In related news, a tragic incident unfolded on December 25, when a suspect involved in a security case seized control of a vehicle’s steering wheel, causing it to veer off the road into a fruit orchard. This action resulted in one soldier’s death and injuries to three others. The suspect managed to escape during the ensuing chaos.
Police had been conducting a coordinated operation to arrest individuals linked to security-related crimes. A suspect, identified as Hamdi Toma, was apprehended and was being transported for further questioning to a police operations centre in Yala province.
The incident occurred while traveling on Route 418 from Pattani to Yala, specifically in the Kalo Tanyong area of Nong Chik district, Pattani.
