Van-detta in Phuket: Foreign tourist sued for road rage ruck (video)

A Thai van driver filed a lawsuit against a foreign man for allegedly assaulting him and another motorist during a traffic dispute on the Bypass Road in Phuket on Sunday, April 6.

Newshawk Phuket Facebook page shared a video of the physical altercation yesterday, April 7. The incident was detailed in the caption which read, “#Phuket #ForeignerPunchesThais This incident took place on April 6 in the evening on Bypass Road. The foreigner punched a Thai van driver.”

In the video, the foreign man is seen arguing with two Thai men, one wearing a white shirt and the other a black shirt. He is shown pointing his finger at one of them before punching them.

The Thai man in the black shirt attempted to dodge the assault and disappeared from the camera’s view, but the man in the white shirt was unable to avoid the punch and collapsed to the ground.

The page also shared a second video in the comments to clarify the events that led to the incident. This footage, captured by the van driver’s dashcam, showed the foreigner driving a black pickup at high speed in the right lane, overtaking the van and several other vehicles.

However, as the road narrowed and the right lane ended, the foreign driver was forced to cut in front of other vehicles to avoid hitting the guardrail.

It is unclear whether a collision occurred but the van driver and another motorist were visibly angry at the foreigner’s actions.

The van driver, identified as Saroj Jakthon, responded to commenters on the news page using his Facebook account, stating that he had already reported the incident to the police.

The video received over 600 comments from Phuket residents, many of whom condemned the foreigner’s violent and reckless behaviour. Several also questioned the police response to the case.

Many commenters expressed concern that the foreign man would merely be fined and released, and some suggested that Thai drivers would be treated differently by police if they behaved similarly.
