Phuket’s healthcare crisis: PM pushes for cancer centre
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra spotlighted healthcare as a critical issue for Phuket, amid public outcry and fundraising efforts to improve cancer treatment facilities on the island.
At a high-level meeting held at Phuket International Airport this morning, the 38 year old Thai PM addressed the urgent need to upgrade state hospitals like Vachira Phuket Hospital to better handle diseases such as cancer, which is on the rise.
“Public healthcare requires upgrading state hospitals to be ready to treat all diseases, especially cancer.”
Currently, residents and businesses are rallying to raise 290 million baht to establish a cancer treatment centre at Vachira Phuket Hospital, the island’s primary government facility.
Donations have surpassed 170 million baht, thanks to contributions from prominent business figures, local families, and the public. Even Thai rock star Artiwara Kongmalai from the band Bodyslam is set to headline a charity concert in March to support the cause.
Despite the overwhelming support, no explanation has been provided as to why the Ministry of Public Health has not allocated funds for this essential project. This cancer centre, funded entirely by donations, is poised to become the first government facility of its kind serving Phuket and five neighbouring provinces.
Ironically, Bangkok Hospital Siriroj, a private institution, opened its 300 million-baht cancer treatment centre on October 1, further emphasising the gap in public healthcare funding.
During her visit, the 38 year old Thai premier also tackled other pressing issues, including traffic management, water and waste management, disaster mitigation, and tourist safety.
Minister of Tourism and Sports Surawong Thienthong proposed transforming Phuket into a hub for global events, solidifying its position as a premium destination, reported The Phuket News.
In related news, the National Health Security Office (NHSO) confirmed its commitment to maintaining the Cancer Anywhere (CA) programme, which empowers patients to choose their preferred location for cancer treatment. This decision comes amidst calls from various experts to discontinue the scheme due to escalating costs.
