Phuket shopper horrified by squirming surprise in salted fish

Worms found in a meal bought from a local shop raise food hygiene concerns

Nothing says “good morning” like finding live worms wriggling in your breakfast. That’s exactly what happened to one unfortunate shopper in Phuket who made a stomach-churning discovery in a serving of fried salted fish bought from a local shop.

The shocking incident, which quickly went viral, sparked a wave of online outrage and renewed calls for stricter food safety standards at markets and consignment shops.

The offending image was posted by Lawai Nai Thanachaikru on the popular local Facebook group Paklok Post. The photo shows sticky rice and a piece of salted fish laid out on paper, complete with what appear to be live worms crawling across the fish.

“To all vendors, if you sell anything, please think about the consumers. Don’t just sell for the sake of it. Seeing something like this in the morning is horrifying. I can’t handle this.”
The post also included the hashtags #LocationBangRong and #ApologiesToThoseEatingBreakfast.

The food was reportedly bought from a consignment shop in Baan Bang Rong, Pa Khlok. After discovering the contamination, the buyer returned the meal to the shop, which promptly refunded the purchase and issued an apology.

According to the customer, the shop staff explained that the food was supplied by an external vendor and was not prepared in-house.

In the wake of the viral post, netizens were quick to condemn the incident. Comments ranged from angry demands to publicly name the vendor to sarcastic barbs such as, “Can the vendor eat this themselves if they’re selling it to others?”

Facing the backlash, the shop owner clarified that the meal had been supplied by a vendor who typically sells fried chicken and salted fish next door. The shop has since informed the vendor of the complaint and urged them to take immediate action to ensure their products meet basic hygiene standards, reported The Phuket News.

An apology was also offered directly to the affected customer.

This incident has reignited ongoing concerns about food safety in Thai markets, especially where shops sell goods from outside suppliers. Many online users are now urging health officials to step up random inspections and hold vendors accountable for putting public health at risk.
