Bets off: Phuket residents roll the dice against casino plan

A group of Phuket locals has rallied against the controversial casino bill, urging the government to halt its progress. Dressed in white shirts, they gathered at Phuket Provincial Hall to submit a petition that firmly rejects the push for casinos in the popular tourist destination.
A group of concerned residents, entrepreneurs, and members of the Phuket State Enterprise Labor Relations Confederation arrived at Phuket Provincial Hall this morning to submit a letter and read a statement calling for the government to reconsider the draft bill on the operation of integrated entertainment businesses, essentially, casinos.
The group, united in their opposition, voiced concerns over the long-term impact the introduction of casinos could have on Phuket’s reputation and the well-being of its residents.
The statement was formally received by Thiraphong Chuaychu, Permanent Secretary of Phuket Province.
In their declaration, the group outlined several reasons for their opposition to the bill, highlighting potential negative consequences that would undermine the city’s sustainable growth and appeal, reported The Phuket News.
The key points raised in the statement included:
-
Undermining Phuket’s image: The group argued that Phuket, as a world-class tourist destination, is renowned for its natural beauty, rich culture, and friendly atmosphere. They warned that the introduction of casinos would tarnish this reputation, turning the city from a “cultural and natural destination” into a “dangerous place,” driving away family tourists and health-conscious visitors.
-
Increased crime and social problems: The statement highlighted concerns about the impact of casinos on local crime rates. With casinos often associated with money laundering, human trafficking, and illegal labour, the group fears that this would place an additional strain on local law enforcement and public services.
-
Negative impact on residents’ quality of life: The group warned that the presence of casinos would encourage gambling addiction, domestic violence, and mental health issues, particularly among vulnerable teenagers and workers, leading to long-term social instability.
-
Concentration of wealth in capital groups: The petitioners argued that casino profits would largely benefit large capital groups, rather than the local community, contradicting the principles of sustainable development that focus on ecotourism and local economic growth.
-
Conflict with sustainable development goals: Phuket has positioned itself as a “sustainable health and tourism city,” with a focus on wellness and environmental preservation. The casino proposal, according to the statement, directly conflicts with these values.
-
Lack of public consultation: The group stressed that there has been no genuine forum for Phuket’s residents to voice their opinions on the bill, accusing the government of disregarding local voices in decisions that will directly impact the province’s future.
