Revved up: Phuket police clamp down on noisy motorcyclists

Phuket City police swooped in during the early hours of Saturday morning in a high-octane operation to apprehend a group of young motorcyclists causing a ruckus with their customised, noisy rides.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Ratchaphas Buakaew and Police Lieutenant Thanakorn Chuaphong were behind the crackdown that revved into action at 4am on Saturday, March 8 on the bustling bypass road.
While the operation didn’t uncover any illegal substances Pol. lt. Col. Ratchaphas and his team slammed the brakes on the modified motorcycles.
Every roaring two-wheeler was seized, with a total of 24 custom bikes impounded and escorted to Phuket City Police Station for a thorough examination.

As the dust settled, the aftermath saw anxious parents arriving to reclaim their daredevil teenagers.
Officers issued stern warnings to both the youngsters and their guardians, laying down the law on motorcycle modifications and stressing the importance of road safety, reported Phuket News.
In similar news last month, officers from Karon Police Station slammed the brakes on three foreigners at a checkpoint on a road in Phuket due to illegal modifications on their bikes.
Karon Police established the checkpoint outside the Holiday Inn Resort Phuket to monitor both Thai and foreign motorists who might be violating traffic laws.
At approximately 3.30pm on Monday, February 3, officers stopped a suspicious-looking Frenchman, 29 year old Mehdi Lamine Chidekh, to inspect his Yamaha TMAX motorcycle.
Upon examination, Chidekh’s motorcycle was found to have several illegal accessories installed, including a modified exhaust pipe that emitted excessive engine noise. No additional illegal items were found in his possession.
Meanwhile, Phuket Provincial Police also experienced the sound of noisy bikes and unruly teenagers just before the famous Vegetarian Festival and the peak tourist season.
Region 8 Police Commander Police Lieutenant General Surapong Thanomchit announced the ongoing campaign to restore public order in the name of safety.
