Phuket parents face charges for children’s illegal street racing

In Phuket, the parents of 14 minors, apprehended during a police operation in Ao Yon, Wichit, on April 1 are facing legal action for permitting their children to partake in illegal street racing.

Wichit Police Chief Somsak Thongkliang announced that the parents were brought to Wichit Police Station to be informed of the charges under Section 26(3) of the Child Protection Act 2003.

This section of the law prohibits individuals from forcing, threatening, inducing, or allowing children to engage in inappropriate behaviour or actions that could lead to wrongdoing. Violators, according to Section 78 of the Act, face penalties of up to three months in prison, a fine not exceeding 30,000 baht, or both.

The police operation specifically targeted gangs of young street racers and minors riding illegally modified motorcycles, who reportedly gather after 10pm, causing disturbances in the area.

In response to these activities, the police initiated a crackdown to curb street racing and ensure public safety.

During the operation, police seized nine motorcycles and detained 14 minors. This crackdown is part of broader efforts to prevent unlawful gatherings and enforce traffic discipline in frequently problematic areas like Laem Dinso and Ao Yon.

The campaign against teenage street racing is being conducted under the guidance of Region 8 Police Commander Surapong Thanomchit and Phuket Provincial Police Commander Sinlert Sukhum. Police Chief Somsak emphasised that the initiative targeting unruly youth, particularly teenage street racers, will persist, reported The Phuket News.

“Police will ensure that parents understand their children’s behaviour and take steps to prevent repeat offences. We are gathering intelligence on gangs operating in the area to preempt further incidents and aid ongoing investigations.

“Police will arrest them and seize the motorcycles used. The parents of those arrested will be called to hear about their children’s behaviour to help prevent repeated offences.

“At the same time, the task force will collect in-depth information about the various gangs in the area to prevent future incidents, as well as use this information for investigations to lead to the arrest of the perpetrators who commit crimes in the area.”
