Amidst the serene landscapes of Lampang, the tranquillity was shattered on December 6, as a high-speed chase ended in the capture of two alleged drug smugglers with amphetamine pills.

The suspects, identified only as 43 year old Worapot and Chainarong, were found in possession of an astonishing 1.3 million amphetamine pills. The apprehension of such a significant drug haul was the outcome of a press conference led by Police Lieutenant General Kritthaphon Yisakorn, the Deputy Commander of Provincial Police Region 5, in collaboration with various law enforcement officials.

The unfolding drama originated from a tip-off received by the local Mae Phrik police. The anonymous source had indicated the presence of two vehicles that were suspected of drug smuggling activities. As the vehicles neared a police checkpoint, however, their behaviour raised suspicion.

In a hasty attempt to evade the authorities, the drivers executed a rapid U-turn and sped off, prompting a high-stakes chase.

The Mae Phrik police, zealous in their pursuit of justice, boldly gave chase. They made the tactical decision to fire upon one of the suspect’s vehicles, specifically targeting the tyre.

Their strategy proved successful, and ultimately the suspects found themselves cornered with no option but to surrender.

Drugs seized

Upon inspection of the vehicles, the police made a shocking discovery. Hidden within were six sacks, each filled with 200,000 amphetamine pills. This revelation underscored the scale of the operation, and the police were quick to seize the drugs as evidence, reported Pattaya News.

The police officers, having made the arrests and confiscated the evidence, suggested a disturbing implication. Pol. Lt. Gen. Kritthaphon proposed that Worapot and Chainarong could potentially be part of a larger drug smuggling operation that extended from a neighbouring country into the heart of Thailand.

“After their arrest, the suspects were immediately transferred to Mae Phrik police station. From there, they will undergo further legal procedures. This case stands as a stark reminder of the persistent battle against drug trafficking that continues to rage in our region. While this represents a significant victory, there remains much work to be done.

“The Mae Phrik police then pursued the suspects and decided to shoot the tire out of one of the suspects’ vehicles until they were cornered and surrendered.

“The police officers inspected the vehicles and discovered six sacks containing 200,000 pills of amphetamine each. The police officers further added that the two suspects were allegedly connected to drug smuggling from a nearby country’s border into central Thailand.”
