Viral video of Thai man kicking motorcyclist sparks police action
A viral TikTok video showing a pedestrian kicking a motorcyclist who failed to stop at a red light and a zebra crossing in Bangkok has led to the arrest of the rider today, January 29.
The Thai TikToker, @p_is_myname, shared a video of himself kicking and arguing with the motorcyclist, later identified as 26 year old Jadesada, with a caption that read…
“Just saw the news about a motorcyclist who did not stop for pedestrians at a zebra crossing and felt very angry. I faced the same thing myself, but the registration plate was not very clear. I have already reported the matter to the police anyway.”
In the video, the TikTok user, wearing a pink shirt and shorts, is seen crossing the road with a group of more than 10 people. Other vehicles stopped for them, but a motorcyclist in a white shirt did not. He rode into the crowd and attempted to pass through them when the TikToker kicked his motorcycle.
The rider became angry at the TikToker’s actions and shouted at him from behind. This prompted the TikToker to turn around and attempt to attack the rider again, at which point the motorcyclist sped away.
The incident reportedly took place at the zebra crossing on Ratchadamri Road near Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok’s Pathum Wan district. It occurred at around 5pm on December 14 last year. The TikTok user later deleted the video, but it was reshared by several news agencies.
Five charges issued
Many netizens agreed that the registration plate shown in the video was clearly visible and accused police officers of being too lazy to bring justice to the TikToker. They criticised the police for treating the incident as a minor accident and failing to take action.
Following the viral video and public complaints, officers from Lumpini Police Station eventually took action, arresting the motorcycle rider, Jadesada, today. Jadesada admitted that he was the motorcyclist in the video.
The suspect claimed that he was on his way to pick up his girlfriend. He was riding at high speed and could not stop at the zebra crossing in time when the traffic light turned red.
Jadesada faces five charges under the Land Transport Act including:
- Section 21: Failing to stop at a zebra crossing. The penalty is a fine of up to 4,000 baht.
- Section 22: Failing to follow traffic signals. The penalty is a fine of up to 1,000 baht.
- Section 41: Driving against the traffic flow. The penalty is a fine of up to 2,000 baht.
- Section 43(8): Driving recklessly without concern for the safety of others. The penalty is imprisonment of up to one year, a fine ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 baht, or both.
- Section 64: Riding a motorcycle without a licence. The penalty is imprisonment of up to one month, a fine of up to 1,000 baht, or both.
