Thai embassies and consulates around the world are prepared to kick off same-sex marriage registrations on Thursday, following the Marriage Equality Act’s enactment tomorrow, January 22.

From Thursday, January 23, same-sex couples will have the opportunity to register their marriages at any district office across Thailand and Thai embassies and consulates abroad.

Karom Ponpornklang, deputy government spokesperson, announced yesterday, January 20, that the Department of Provincial Administration is set to support these registrations across 878 districts nationwide from Thursday.

The department, serving as the central registrar, has collaborated with Bangkok’s 50 district offices and 94 embassies and consulates overseas to ensure a smooth registration process.

An Interior Ministry regulation concerning family registrations has been devised to support LGBTQ communities. Marriage and divorce systems have been enhanced, with additional certificates published to meet anticipated demand once the law is enacted.

Staff have been trained to be knowledgeable about the new law and to maintain proper service etiquette for same-sex couples. Karom mentioned that activities nationwide will celebrate the enactment of the marriage equality law tomorrow.

“The government, the Interior Ministry, and the Department of Provincial Administration are ready to facilitate LGBTQ couples’ registrations, promoting gender equality and diversity. This will also enhance Thailand’s international image.”

Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, leader of the People’s Party (PP), expressed support for the new law in a video shared by the opposition party. He noted that the now-dissolved Move Forward Party, which has reformed as the PP, prioritised the law’s passage. The PP plans to monitor and address any issues arising after the law’s implementation.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will host Marriage Equality Day and a mass marriage registration event at Paragon Hall in Siam Paragon on January 23, from 8.30am to 4.30pm.

Couples intending to register at Siam Paragon or one of Bangkok’s 50 district offices are encouraged to complete an online form beforehand via the provided link. They must bring ID cards or equivalent government-issued documents and household registration papers.

Foreigners need to present passports and single-status certificates from their home country or embassy in Thailand.

The Marriage Equality Act received endorsement from His Majesty the King and was published in the Royal Gazette on September 24, positioning Thailand as the third Asian country or territory, following Taiwan and Nepal, to recognise same-sex marriage, reported Bangkok Post.

The new law permits individuals aged 18 or older to register their marriage, granting them the same rights and benefits as heterosexual couples. However, those under 20 will still require parental or guardian consent.
