Thailand and Japan unite for Songkran Warm Water Onsen event

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is collaborating with Japan to celebrate the Songkran Warm Water Onsen event, aiming to link the Songkran festival with international tourism promotion.

This initiative is expected to boost foreign visits to Thailand. Thapanee Kiatpaiboon, Governor of TAT, announced that this month, TAT will actively promote Thailandโ€™s Songkran festival.

For example, from April 5 to 6, the TATโ€™s Fukuoka office will participate in the Songkran Warm Water Onsen event at the Beppu Hatto Onpaku (Hot Springs Expo) in Beppu, Oita prefecture, under the Grand Festivities banner. TATโ€™s participation will include setting up activity booths, connecting significant traditions of Thailand and Japan.

This event will deliver a unique Thai tourism experience under the Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year 2025 campaign. It will showcase the must-try and must-see Thai tradition of Songkran, aligning perfectly with Beppuโ€™s warm water onsen tradition.

The event will conclude with games offering special prizes, including Thai accommodations and products. It is anticipated to attract about 40,000 participants over two days.

The collaboration follows Beppuโ€™s mayorโ€™s meeting in February with TATโ€™s deputy governor for Asia and South Pacific markets, along with directors from East Asia regions. This partnership aims to enhance wellness tourism and strengthen relations with Beppu, reported KhaoSod.

Discussions are underway to potentially hold a Thai Week in 2026, preceding the Songkran Warm Water Onsen and Beppu Hatto Onpaku festivals. This initiative seeks to increase awareness of Thailand, stimulate travel, and promote sustainable Thai-Japanese tourism.

In similar news, Phuket will host its annual alcohol-free Songkran festival this Sunday, April 13, celebrating the cultural significance of the holiday with traditional activities, cultural performances, live music, and a family-friendly atmosphere. This event promotes both tourism and local businesses.

The 11th annual Songkran No Alcohol Festival Phuket 2025 is organised by the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation, Phuket Tourism Business Association, Limelight Phuket Shopping Mall, and various local businesses.

The festival not only preserves Songkranโ€™s cultural essence but also supports local enterprises and hotels. Recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage, the event aims to reduce alcohol-related accidents during the celebrations.
