A 20 year old university student crashed his car into electricity poles along Kanchanaphisek Road, damaging 12 poles and three cars, due to drowsiness caused by antihistamines, a medicine used to treat allergy symptoms.

Officers from Phetchakasem Police Station were alerted to the accident at a curve on Kanchanaphisek Road yesterday, January 5. Upon arrival, officers found a damaged blue Suzuki Swift hatchback parked at the edge of the footpath.

Damaged electricity poles and wires were scattered across the scene, and three other vehicles had been damaged by the falling poles. Fortunately, the drivers and passengers of these vehicles escaped unscathed.

The driver of the hatchback, 20 year old Yotsakorn, sustained only minor injuries. He told the police that he fell asleep while driving along Kanchanaphisek Road.

Yotsakorn explained that he initially crashed into a roadside plant pot on the traffic island before hitting one of the electricity poles. The impact caused the pole to collapse, which in turn brought down other poles connected by wires.

Yotsakorn revealed that he was on his way to university and attributed his drowsiness to the antihistamines he had taken before driving.

Fortunately, the accident occurred on a Sunday, when the road was not busy. However, the damage to the electricity poles caused a power outage in the area, affecting approximately 150 households.

According to a report from Channel 7, officials from the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) rushed to the scene to repair the damaged poles. Power was restored to the area later that night.

The owners of the three damaged cars and a representative from the MEA are expected to file complaints against Yotsakorn at Phetchakasem Police Station. The total cost of the damage has not yet been determined. Daily News reported that Yotsakorn’s car insurance policy provides coverage of up to five million baht.

Original story: Blue Suzuki Swift’s shocking turn leaves Bangkok in the dark

Bangkok was thrown into chaos yesterday after a blue Suzuki Swift crash led to a major power outage. The scene of destruction unfolded early yesterday morning, as 12 power poles came crashing down like dominoes.

The spectacle began at around 8am, January 5, at the notorious Wee Liam bend on Kanchanaphisek Road, right in the heart of the Bang Khae district. The car, bearing Chon Buri province plates, failed to conquer the treacherous curve, slamming into a power pole and sending 11 others tumbling in dramatic sequence.

This chain reaction plunged around 150 homes into complete darkness, leaving residents frustrated and angry. Several unlucky vehicles parked nearby also bore the brunt of the catastrophe, adding to the chaos, reported Bangkok Post

Electricity officials are hopeful of a speedy resolution, assuring the public that power was expected to be restored to all affected areas by last night, said an official spokesperson.

“We are working diligently to ensure power is restored as swiftly as possible.”

The 20 year old driver of the car incredibly escaped with just minor injuries, in what could only be described as a lucky escape.
