Thai PM meets Xi Jinping at APEC, boosts China ties

At 10am local time in Lima, Peru, on November 15, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra engaged in a significant bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Summit. The discussions highlighted the enduring partnership between Thailand and China, marking the year as the Golden Year of Thai-Chinese Friendship.

PM Paetongtarn confirmed support for China’s role as the host of APEC in 2026 while extending a cordial invitation to President Xi and his wife for the 50th-anniversary celebration events in Thailand.

The 38 year old Thai premier commended China’s strides, particularly its policies fostering a new quality productive force, which aligns with Thailand’s aspirations for globalisation and free trade.

“We are thrilled to support China in its upcoming hosting of APEC and look forward to strengthening our ties further.”

President Xi underscored the unique and profound friendship between the two nations, committing to broadening cooperation in trade, innovation, clean energy, space technology, and education. Both leaders shared an interest in learning from each other’s achievements, especially in the domains of poverty alleviation and sustainable development.

Thailand pledged its involvement in the Global Civilisation Initiative, aimed at fostering cultural exchanges and enhancing soft power. President Xi reinforced China’s dedication to ongoing collaboration within regional frameworks like the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) and the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (MLC).

“Our nations have much to gain from continued cooperation, and we are keen to expand our initiatives together,” President Xi remarked.

Moreover, China will enhance agricultural imports from Thailand, increase investments, and strengthen cultural connections. The two countries plan to work together to address cross-border crime and cyber threats. President Xi’s announcement of these developments was met with enthusiasm among Thai citizens, reported The Pattaya News.

In a gesture of spiritual significance, President Xi confirmed the transfer of the revered Buddha Tooth Relic to Thailand.

This sacred relic will be enshrined at Bangkok’s Sanam Luang on December 4, in commemoration of King Rama X’s 72nd birthday. This historic occasion symbolises the deep cultural and spiritual ties between Thailand and China.
