Thai nurse accused of defrauding soldier of nearly 700,000 baht
A Thai soldier fell victim to a romance scam allegedly orchestrated by a nurse and appealed for the woman to return nearly 700,000 baht, as his family is now in financial crisis. He admitted ignoring warnings from his son.
The 50 year old soldier sought help from the non-profit organisation Saimai Survive after losing nearly 700,000 baht to the 41 year old Thai nurse, who he later discovered was having an affair with another man.
The soldier explained that he was a widower and had one son with his ex-wife. He began using a dating application and met the nurse. They began a relationship with her two weeks after the first conversation.
Since the beginning of the relationship, the nurse then persuaded him to invest in her business and borrowed money from him, claiming her father was unwell.
She borrowed increasingly larger amounts until he was forced to pawn his gold necklaces, plots of land, and motorcycle to provide her with the requested sums.
The nurse assured him she would return the money, claiming she had 400,000 baht in her bank account which was temporarily frozen due to complications.
The soldier admitted that he began to grow suspicious of her actions but trusted her because she visited his home multiple times to care for his old mother and his son.
His son warned him to distance himself from the nurse due to suspicions of a scam but the soldier chose to ignore the warning.
The truth began to unravel when the soldier received a call from a male stranger who questioned whether he was the nurse’s lawyer. The soldier denied this, stating that he was her boyfriend.
The man, confused by the revelation, disclosed that the nurse was also his girlfriend and told him that the soldier was her lawyer. He revealed that they had been in a relationship since April – the same time the soldier began dating her.
When the soldier confronted the nurse, she denied the accusation, claiming the man was not her lover but a scammer trying to defraud her.
The soldier told the organisation that he no longer believed the nurse and urged her to return all the money she took. He expressed hope that the nurse would feel remorse and take responsibility if she read or heard about the story in the news.
