Thai footballer auctions jersey for Chiang Rai flood victims

Thailand international footballer Ekanit Panya auctioned his jersey from the LP Bank Cup 2024 match against Vietnam to aid flood victims in Chiang Rai. The auction quickly garnered attention, with bids reaching 50,000 baht within an hour.

The 24 year old football player announced on Facebook at 8.47pm yesterday, September 12, the auction of his Thai national team jersey. He wore this jersey during the LP Bank Cup 2024 match against Vietnam. The purpose of the auction is to support those affected by severe flooding in Chiang Rai province, said Ekanit.

“Starting the auction at 999 baht, it will run from now until September 14 (tomorrow) at 9pm.”

The response to the auction has been overwhelming. Within just one hour, the highest bid had already soared to 50,000 baht, showcasing the community’s willingness to support a good cause.

Ekanit, originally from Chiang Rai, began his football career with Chiang Rai United at the age of 15. His talents soon propelled him to the national stage, earning a spot on the Thai national team by the age of 19. Currently, he is a player for Muangthong United, although he is on loan to Urawa Red Diamonds in Japan’s J-League, reported KhaoSod.

In related news, Mae Fah Luang International Airport in the northern province of Chiang Rai remains open despite heavy flooding in the area. However, some airlines cancelled flights for safety reasons.

The official Facebook page of Mae Fah Luang Airport issued an announcement yesterday, September 12, stating that the airport is open as usual, although the entrance is flooded. The water level was still below the footpath according to the latest update at around 4.30am.

In other news, Lotto Plus announced an initial donation of 500,000 baht to aid flood relief efforts in Chiang Rai, with plans to visit the area tomorrow, September 13. Residents are encouraged to share posts to raise more funds.
