Thai Airways slashes baggage limit to 23kg: How it affects you

Passengers flying with Thai Airways will soon have to pack a little lighter, as the airline has announced a reduction in checked baggage allowance for certain Economy Class tickets. Effective April 1, the standard baggage weight for some economy fare classes will be reduced from 25kg to 23kg.

The new baggage policy applies to domestic and international flights for passengers travelling on Thai Airways, including those booking individual tickets (FIT) and group fares (GIT). However, not all tickets will be affected. To fall under the new limit, tickets must meet these four conditions:

  1. Be for domestic or international travel on Thai Airways flights.
  2. Be economy class tickets under the fare classes K, S, V (Standard) and W, L (Saver).
  3. Be entirely unused and scheduled for travel from April 1 onwards.
  4. Have been changed or reissued on or after April 1 for travel beyond this date.

Tickets in other economy class categories – such as T, Q, H, M, B, and Y – will retain the 30kg allowance. Passengers holding G Class tickets will see an allowance of either 25kg or 30kg, depending on the specific case.

Premium economy, Royal Silk Class, and Royal First Class passengers will not be affected by the changes. These fare categories will continue to offer generous baggage allowances of 35kg, 40kg, and 50kg, respectively.

A notable exception applies to economy class passengers travelling on W-class tickets to Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam – these tickets will come with no checked baggage allowance.

Thai Airways has reassured travellers that the adjustment will only affect newly issued or reissued tickets from April 1. For those who booked flights before this date and do not change their itinerary, the existing baggage policies will remain in place, reported KhaoSod.
