Tragic crash: Trang train-pickup collision kills 4

A tragic train and pickup truck collision in Kantang district, Trang province, resulted in the deaths of four passengers in the back of the truck.

The train driver had sounded the horn but could not stop the train in time, leading to the crash at 2.40pm yesterday, March 13. The incident involved a rapid train number 168 travelling from Kantang to Krungthep Aphiwat and a bronze-black half-cab pickup truck registered in Songkhla.

Upon inspection, the pickup was found with significant damage. The driver’s side front area had an open hood, the windshield was shattered, and the rear of the truck was heavily damaged.

A witness near the scene, who was selling goods at the time, recounted hearing a loud collision and ran to see the aftermath.

The witness reported feeling shaken and saw people ejected from the vehicle, landing in different directions. Four people died at the scene, and six others were injured.

Further inquiries revealed that the pickup carried ten people, including the driver and two passengers in the front, and seven in the back. They were travelling from Songkhla to catch shrimp.

The train driver explained that upon reaching the crossing, he saw the pickup cutting across the tracks. Despite sounding the horn, he could not stop the train in time, resulting in a collision with the truck’s rear.

The pickup driver was unharmed, but the passengers in the back were thrown from the vehicle, with items scattered around.

Preliminary assumptions suggest that the pickup driver did not hear the train’s horn and believed the truck could clear the tracks, thinking it had moved far enough past the railway. Unfortunately, the speed was insufficient, leading to the tragic accident, reported KhaoSod.

In similar news, a 53 year old woman tragically lost her life after being struck by a freight train while riding her motorcycle and using her mobile phone near a railway crossing in Thung Song, Nakhon Si Thammarat.

The accident occurred on March 8, prompting emergency services and police to respond to the scene. Police Lieutenant Uthai Yodrach of Thung Song Police Station confirmed the incident, which took place near Phatthana village within Thung Song municipality.

The train conductor had already reported the accident to the station master. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
