Police seize 483kg of crystal meth in major Pathum Thani raid
Thai police recently arrested two suspects in Pathum Thani and seized 483 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine in the process.
The pair, a man and a woman, confessed to planning to transport the drugs across borders, revealing a lucrative payment for their involvement.
The operation was part of a broader government initiative to eradicate drug trafficking in Thailand, spearheaded by the Royal Thai Army under the command of Pana Klaewplodthuk.
In response to these directives, military intelligence units across the nation intensified their efforts to dismantle drug networks.
This particular raid was carried out by the Narcotics Suppression Bureau and military intelligence, in cooperation with various law enforcement agencies.
According to intelligence reports, a network of drug traffickers operating in southern Thailand had arranged for a large shipment of drugs.
The investigation led the coalition of agencies to a rented house in Khlong Luang, Pathum Thani, where the drugs were being stored. The swift action resulted in the arrest of the two alleged criminals: 33 year old Manoch, and 30 year old Thanaporn.
The suspects admitted to preparing to transport the drugs to the southern region, a task they had performed three times prior. This time, they were promised a payment of 1 million baht for delivering the drugs to Songkhla.
Thailand often finds itself a transit hub for illegal drugs from the Golden Triangle, with crystal methamphetamine, heroin, and ketamine frequently passing through en route to other destinations.
Large-scale smuggling operations typically employ maritime routes to reach countries such as Australia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
The suspects currently face charges of possessing a Category 1 narcotic with intent to distribute, a serious offense under Thai law that could result in severe penalties. They have been remanded in custody at Thung Song Hong Police Station as legal proceedings continue, reported KhaoSod.
In other news, Bangkok police officers arrested five Chinese nationals for working illegally as construction workers. They were earning 2,200 baht per day, significantly higher than Thailand’s minimum wage and the standard pay rate for legal construction workers.
