Muay Thai madness: Paris 2024 to host epic martial arts showcase

Muay Thai will feature as a thrilling side event at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, from July 26 to August 11. This landmark occasion will see over 1,000 Muay Thai boxers from 24 countries across five continents, according to Dr Sakchye Tapsuwan, President of the International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA).

“This is a monumental step towards the dream of Muay Thai becoming an official Olympic sport.”

The five-day Muay Thai extravaganza promises to be a spectacular affair, with exhibitions and workshops showcasing the ancient Thai martial art. The main highlight is scheduled for August 5 and 6, featuring riveting bouts between international fighters. A special boxing ring will be set up at Club France, offering a prime location for the matches.

Adding to the excitement, world-renowned Muay Thai champion Buakaw Banchamek will perform the traditional wai kru ritual. This ceremonial dance, performed by fighters before a match, pays homage to their teachers and sets the stage for the combat.

Meanwhile, Stefan Fox, IFMA Secretary-General, highlighted the federation’s growing global recognition.

“Our federation now boasts 152 associations across five continents.”

Dr Sakchye, who also serves as President of the Amateur Muaythai Association of Thailand, revealed that Thailand is gearing up to send athletes in 13 weight classes to the IFMA Senior World Championship 2024 in Greece, scheduled from May 31 to June 9. These classes include seven categories for male boxers and six for female fighters, underscoring Thailand’s commitment to promoting and developing Muay Thai on the world stage, reported Thai PBS World.

Paris 2024 is set to be a historic event for Muay Thai enthusiasts worldwide, bringing the intensity and artistry of this martial art to the Olympic spotlight.

In related news, Thailand is set to host its first-ever mixed martial arts event for police officers only, targeted for May 28 at Rajadamnern Stadium, the appropriately titles Cops Combat event will see police officers from various parts of the country competing in a combat sports tournament.
