Bangkok lottery retailer scammed out of 36,000 baht in fake lottery ticket fiasco
A Bangkok lottery retailer filed a complaint with the police after she was tricked into buying 400 fake tickets worth 36,000 baht by a big lottery dealer in the Isaan province of Khon Kaen.
The victim, Paiwan, and her husband filed a complaint at Rattanathibet Police Station on February 10 at 3pm after she realised that she had been scammed.
The 44 year old woman revealed that she ordered the lottery tickets from a dealer in the Baan Nong Loop Market in the Daeng Yai sub-district of Khon Kaen. They were the tickets for the February 16 draw. She bought them for 90 baht each, amounting to 36,000 baht.
Normally, the Government Lottery Office (GLO) sells lottery tickets to local retail sellers at 70.40 baht. The sellers then add their cut and retail them at 80 baht each. Paiwan’s tickets were over 20 baht more expensive.
Paiwan said the tickets were sent from Khon Kaen to her house in Bangkok, but upon touching the tickets, she realized they were counterfeit. The papers were dissimilar to real tickets, but all other details appeared genuine.
Paiwan decided to take all of the tickets to the GLO. The officers checked and confirmed that the whole batch was fake.
The police officer seized all of the counterfeit lottery tickets as evidence and reported that they would work with local officers in Khon Kaen to uncover the source of the fake tickets.
Baan Nong Loop Market is the biggest government lottery market in Khon Kaen, and all local retailers purchased their tickets from there.
There could be over 400 bogus lottery tickets circulating in the province and surrounding provinces, according to Bangkokbiz News.
To detect a fake ticket, look for the GLO’s logo watermark and check if the ink on the ticket dissolves in water; authentic tickets use ink that will not dissolve when exposed to water.
