Fire at Surat Thani rubber plant causes 10 million baht damage

A fire at a rubber smoking plant in Baan Tha Hak, Mueang 3 subdistrict, Pha Wa district, Surat Thani province destroyed over 16 tonnes of rubber sheets and caused damage estimated at nearly 10 million baht (US$296,320). The blaze, which occurred at 9.30pm yesterday, January 29, was reported to Police Lieutenant Sarawut Kittiruengrayap, an investigator at Chaiya Police Station.

Upon receiving the report, the incident was revealed to senior officers and firefighting units from nearby municipalities, including Talat Chaiya, Phum Riang, and Prasong, were mobilised. Some five fire trucks were dispatched to the scene to combat the intense flames that engulfed the rubber sheet ovens, with thick smoke spreading widely and complicating firefighting efforts.

Emergency services worked for over four hours to bring the fire under control, focusing on preventing its spread to minimise risks to nearby property and residents. The black smoke posed a health hazard to the local community.

Initial assessments indicate significant damage, with more than 16 tonnes of rubber sheets burnt in the incident, reported KhaoSod.

While the exact cause of the fire is not yet confirmed, it is suspected to have been sparked by an ignition source. Forensic officials are currently conducting investigations to determine the precise cause of the fire.

In similar news, a fire broke out in a commercial building in Bang Khun Thian, Bangkok on January 26 at 2.15pm, resulting in three injuries. A 57 year old man sought refuge on the rooftop, using water from a tank to cool himself as firefighters battled the flames for over four hours.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Sathorn Rabiabpho received a report of the incident at building number 31, Soi Thian Thale 26, Bang Khun Thian district. Fire trucks from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, along with Ruamkatanyu Foundation, were dispatched to the scene.
