Defence minister sets 1 week deadline for southern unrest report

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has given security forces a week to submit a report on their efforts to address the ongoing unrest in Thailand’s southernmost provinces.

Yesterday, April 28, Phumtham instructed the Royal Thai Army chief to adopt a more proactive strategy for dealing with security issues in the Deep South. The police and military have also been tasked with reporting their progress within the week.

This deadline is part of the government’s effort to monitor progress in combating threats and to instil a heightened sense of urgency among local officials to maintain peace and order in the region. Phumtham acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting the presence of conflicting information that requires discussion and clarification.

Phumtham also responded to a proposal from the private sector, urging the government to consider lifting martial law in parts of the four southernmost provinces.

Business leaders believe that the situation has stabilised and that lifting martial law could enhance trade. However, Phumtham stated that the Cabinet has not yet decided on this matter. Recent violence has delayed discussions, as immediate security concerns take precedence.

Regarding peace talks, Phumtham insisted that the government remains committed to engaging only with legitimate leaders of the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) rebel group. He pointed out that past negotiations were unsuccessful because the BRN representatives lacked the authority to halt the violence.

Phumtham mentioned that the Thai government would partner with the peace talk facilitator appointed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. If violence continues, Malaysian authorities will explore ways to support Thailand, reported Bangkok Post.

In Yala, an unknown number of armed attackers ambushed and fatally shot 34 year old Volunteer Defence Corps member Thirawut Phutharat, who was shopping in Bannang Sata district yesterday. The attackers set fire to his vehicle and body after the shooting.

This incident followed a bomb attack on Saturday in Narathiwat’s Rueso district, where insurgents targeted a military outpost with two homemade pipe bombs, injuring one civilian. Police are currently investigating both incidents.
