Deadly crossing: Locals demand action after Frenchman hit by car

Locals in Kanchanaburi are demanding urgent safety measures after a Frenchman was hit by a car on a poorly lit zebra crossing near JJ Market last night.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene in Mueang district after reports of a pedestrian accident. They arrived to find a black Mitsubishi sedan with a shattered front end and cracked windows, evidence of the brutal impact.

Lying nearby was Clement Antoin Valery Billy, a French national, unconscious and barely breathing. He suffered serious lacerations on his right arm and left shoulder, with abrasions across his body. Rescue teams performed CPR before rushing the 40 year old to Phaholyothin Hospital.

Surveillance footage revealed the chilling moment the Frenchman attempted to cross. With the road mostly clear, he made it to the central median, but as he looked down, he failed to spot a speeding car hurtling towards him. By the time he tried to jump clear, it was too late: the vehicle slammed into him, launching his body across the road.

The young male driver and his female passenger in her 30s remained at the scene, cooperating with police.

Residents say the dangerous crossing is an accident waiting to happen, with faded road markings, no flashing lights, and barely any street lighting.

“This place is a death trap at night,” one frustrated local said. “Drivers speed through here like it’s a motorway because there’s no clear crossing or warnings.”

By 8.30am today, April 3, reporters inspected the site, confirming the hazardous conditions. The zebra lines are almost invisible, and without proper warning signs or lights, drivers can’t see pedestrians in time.

Locals are now urging officials to install proper lighting, repaint crossings, and add flashing signals to prevent another tragedy.

“This should be a wake-up call before someone else gets killed,” said another resident.

With cars still racing through the area, the question remains: how many more lives will be put at risk before action is taken?
