Bets off: Jilted Thai man gambles on lawsuit after wedding deception
A Thai man is taking legal action against his ex-girlfriend, who tricked him into transferring 500,000 baht to fund her gambling, claiming the money was for their dream wedding.
The victim, 38 year old Jaruwat, filed a complaint against his ex-girlfriend at the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB)‘s complaint centre today, October 3. Jaruwat said he was the victim of a romance scam. His ex-girlfriend, Meen, now has a new boyfriend after he refused to transfer her more money.
According to Jaruwat, he was in a relationship with Meen for eight months. She introduced him to her family and friends, which made him trust and love her more. Meen then asked him to get engaged, requesting 450,000 baht in cash and 83,000 baht in gold.
Meen reassured the victim that she wouldn’t keep the money for herself; instead, it would be used for their wedding. Jaruwat mentioned that he provided Meen with the amount she requested, even going so far as to borrow some of the funds from others. She pledged to marry him and start a family together.
Unfortunately, Jaruwat later discovered her gambling addiction and found that the entire wedding budget was spent on gambling. He was devastated by the truth but continued the relationship. However, this time, he refused to give her more money.
Without financial support, Meen gradually distanced herself from Jaruwat. He later discovered that she already had a new boyfriend. Jaruwat attempted to contact her and demanded his money back but to no avail. He left a message for Meen:
“If you’re watching this news, repay me some of the money. I only want 300,000 out of the 500,000 baht, and I will drop all the charges.”
After sharing his story with the media, Jaruwat met with the police to discuss the matter but did not provide an update on the next steps of the legal proceedings.
In a similar case, a Thai security guard experienced a similar incident in June. He lost about 10,000 baht to his girlfriend, who promised to marry him. The guard, who earned only 500 baht per day, transferred 300 baht to the woman daily but she eventually disappeared.
Fortunately, a Danish man came across his story and offered support by transferring 10,000 baht to him, while also warning him not to fall for any more unfaithful women.
