2 Thai teenagers drown in Suphan Buri canal while washing hair

Two Thai teenagers drowned in a canal in the central province of Suphan Buri after entering the water with a friend to wash their hair following a dyeing session.

A seven year old girl ran from the Jorrakay Samphan Canal back to her community yesterday, April 7, to seek help after her two older friends, 15 year old Kate and 17 year old Kratae, disappeared beneath the water.

Residents then alerted a nearby rescue foundation. Diving volunteers from three rescue teams, the Samorkan Suphan Buri Foundation, the Dok Kaew Foundation, and the Jaknarai Foundation, responded and arrived at the scene.

Channel 7 reported that the canal is approximately 20 metres wide and 3 metres deep. The divers split into two teams and took turns searching for the missing teenagers.

Seventeen-year-old Noi told rescuers and the media that she and three friends went to the canal to dye their hair. After dyeing, three of them entered the water together to rinse the dye out, while the youngest girl waited on the bank.

Noi said they were suddenly dragged under by a vortex. She managed to escape the current and get out of the canal but her two friends vanished. She then instructed the youngest girl to run for help.

The first team of divers recovered the lifeless body of Kate shortly after beginning the search. Kate’s 15 year old boyfriend reportedly broke down in tears and attempted to jump into the canal to take his own life.

The second team continued to search for Kratae but initially found no trace of her. Over an hour later, they discovered her body 30 metres from the spot where the girls had entered the water.

The bodies of the two teenagers were taken to U Thong Hospital for autopsies.

The man reportedly walked into the sea while under the influence of alcohol. Alert bystanders followed him into the water and managed to pull him to safety.
