Dog alerts owners to 5-metre king cobra under car bonnet

Unusual barking from a dog led to a startling discovery when a large king cobra, nearly 5 metres, was found hiding under a car bonnet. Weighing over 30 kilogrammes, the snake was later captured by rescue officials yesterday, March 12, in Krabi province.
The incident occurred when rescue teams from the Pracharuamjai Foundation in Thung Yai district, Nakhon Si Thammarat province, and Khao Phanom district, Krabi, were called to handle a large king cobra.
The snake had slithered into the bonnet of a red car, registered as กธ-9850 Krabi, parked in front of house number 261, Moo 8, Na Khao subdistrict, Khao Phanom district, Krabi, which borders Thung Yai district, Nakhon Si Thammarat.
Jirawat, the homeowner, recounted that the snake’s unusual size and the dog’s abnormal barking prompted him to investigate. Upon checking, he spotted the enormous cobra slithering past his front door and into the space under the car’s bonnet.
Jirawat expressed his shock at the size of the snake, which he had never encountered before. Lacking expertise in handling such a venomous reptile, he promptly contacted the Pracharuamjai Foundation for assistance.

The rescue team faced a challenging task, requiring significant effort and caution due to the snake’s location amidst numerous obstructions within the vehicle’s engine compartment.
Ultimately, they managed to extract the king cobra, much to the amazement of onlookers, as it measured nearly 5 metres in length and weighed over 30 kilogrammes. It is believed to be a royal king cobra.
The snake was contained in a sack and relocated to a safe area far from the community. Experts from the Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Protected Area Regional Office 5 highlighted that during the dry season, king cobras often venture into villages in search of water and food as their natural sources dwindle, reported KhaoSod.
This period also marks their mating season, leading to more frequent sightings by locals. Residents living near forests are advised to exercise heightened caution due to the potential danger posed by these snakes.
