Soldiers from the Pha Mueang Task Force intercepted a drug trafficking operation, seizing 400,000 methamphetamine pills in Fang district, Chiang Mai province. The encounter, which took place at 12.30am yesterday, March 4, resulted in no injuries or fatalities.

Captain Sawatsakon Onkaew, commanding officer of the 3rd Cavalry Company, under the Chaianuphap Special Task Force, directed two military patrol teams to monitor the area. This operation aligns with Major General Kidakorn Chantra’s directive to integrate efforts to eradicate drug trafficking.

Intelligence from the Pha Mueang military reported drug smugglers using a footpath behind Khob Deng village. Consequently, the 3rd Cavalry Company conducted patrols along the border in Khob Deng, Mon Pin subdistrict, Fang district.

At approximately 1.45am, during their patrol, soldiers encountered a group of about five people carrying backpacks and firearms. When ordered to stop for inspection, the group fired at the soldiers, prompting a 10-minute exchange of gunfire.

After the confrontation, the soldiers secured the area and discovered four modified sacks abandoned by the group. Each sack contained 100,000 methamphetamine pills, totalling around 400,000 pills.

No drug traffickers were found injured or dead at the site, which is located less than 2 kilometres from the Thai-Myanmar border. It is believed that more drugs are stored near the border, awaiting opportunities to be smuggled into Thailand.

Later, at 1pm, Colonel Amnat Wachiraksaksopana, commander of the Chaianuphap Special Task Force, inspected the area and encouraged the soldiers, reported KhaoSod.

He held a press conference with representatives from the Pha Mueang Task Force, the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), the Fang Drug Suppression Police (Fang NPS, Division 2, Narcotics Suppression Bureau 3), Fang district administration, Fang police, Border Patrol Police 334, and the Fang Territorial Defence Volunteers. All seized items were handed over to the Fang Police Station for further legal proceedings.
