Gambling legality in Thailand

Thailand’s tourism industry has been going through a bit of a renaissance, with visitors flocking from all over Europe, America, and Asia. Many come to experience the authentic Thai culture, see the incredible sights, and learn something more about the country’s fascinating history.

Many of the visitors, however, are gambling fans, who’d like to play a hand or two. But, they end up being quite disappointed to learn that gambling is illegal in the Kingdom – but for how much longer? Considering the success of many casino online sites throughout Europe, a lot of European tourists are particularly miffed.

The good news is that the Thai government is planning a pretty big legal change, that might completely turn the industry on its face. In this article, we would like to discuss gambling legality in Thailand, and what the future holds.

Legal Gambling Venues

When researching gambling legality in Thailand, most people will find that gambling is illegal in all its forms. However, that is not the whole truth. In fact, there are legal venues for gambling in the country. The two government-sanctioned ways to gamble are the national lotto and horse racing.

The lottery is particularly popular, but of course, it is mostly locals who partake in this one. Gamblers buy scratchers, hoping to get the right collection of numbers, that result in a jackpot, or a prize of some kind. Most participants are already familiar with lotteries, as a lot of countries in Europe also operate them.

On the other hand, the government sanctioned horse racing events draw in an international crowd as well. Thai gamblers are especially fond of horse betting. However, considering the sport’s status at online bookmakers, many visitors will be familiar with how betting on the ponies works as well.

New Laws for the Future

In 2024, the country’s government came out with the Thailand Entertainment Complex Act. Based on the name, we are certain that many can gather, this law is in reference to casinos operating within the Buddhist kingdom. The Thai government is expected to debate this new law in 2025.

According to the law, five gaming resorts are going to be introduced in the country, with the capital, Bangkok, expected to host two of them. For many, the legislation came as a bit of good news. However, not every resident of Thailand is particularly excited about the concept.

There is no doubt that new casinos are going to lead to an increase in tourism. Not only that, but running businesses would naturally generate revenue, and create jobs. On the other hand, a lot of the older generations worry about the availability of gambling for the next generation.

The Future of Casinos in Thailand

The proposal has been met with overwhelmingly positive support, receiving an 82% approval rating, at least in its early stages last year. So, with that in mind, it is very likely that legal casinos are going to come to Thailand in the future.

Though some may worry, it seems that most believe that the pros will outweigh the cons. Indeed, land-based (and online) casino have proven quite effecting in stimulating local and national economies worldwide. Needless to say, plenty of Thailand’s residents are excited.
