Purr-severance: Cat rescued from Bangkok rubble becomes a star

A brave little cat has stolen the hearts of the nation after she was rescued, or sniffed out alive, by a heroic rescue dog more than a week after a devastating earthquake brought down a 30-storey building.

The two-month-old tabby, now named Satong, was discovered late Sunday night amid the rubble of the collapsed State Audit Office building, thanks to Naree, a clever sniffer dog working with a rescue team.

Miraculously, Satong had managed to survive ten days in the twisted wreckage without food or water, becoming the sole animal pulled out alive from the ruins.

She was immediately rushed to Wipawadee Pet Clinic for emergency treatment and now she’s not just recovering, she’s fast becoming a furry celebrity.

The clinic’s Facebook page has exploded with messages from cat lovers desperate to give Satong a forever home.

Dr Wipawadee Pathom-rapeepong, the vet who took her in, shared the heartwarming update yesterday, April 7.

“The orange cat found by K9 Naree last night is with me. Anybody who wants to adopt her can take her free of charge.”

Dr Wipawadee, who has been volunteering in rescue efforts to save animals trapped in the debris, explained the kitten’s new name is packed with meaning.

“I named her Satong because she’s so strong. It’s also spelt the same way as the abbreviation for the State Audit Office, though it’s pronounced differently. The cat will grow up strong, that’s for sure.”

Satong underwent further tests yesterday and was found to have a fever, a coronavirus infection, and other minor ailments but nothing that can’t be treated. The clinic assured followers that she’s receiving round-the-clock care and will be nursed back to full health before being rehomed.

Supporters flooded the clinic’s post with love and admiration for the resilient kitten, calling her “inspirational” and “a little lioness.”

One follower, Pojana Manotham, said Satong has become a star and will definitely be welcomed into a new home.

“I just hope it won’t be a condo. I’m a bit worried about that.”

Free adoption

Her comment reflects wider unease about high-rise safety in the wake of the quake, which rocked Bangkok and surrounding provinces.

While many are clamouring to adopt Satong, Dr Wipawadee issued a gentle reminder that the lucky moggy isn’t the only one in need of love.

“I have many more cats waiting for free adoption, not only Satong.”

Indeed, the clinic has long been a refuge for strays, rescues, and abandoned animals, many of whom have been quietly waiting for their moment to shine, Bangkok Post reported.

Still, it’s Satong who has become the unexpected poster cat for survival, strength, and second chances.

One fan wrote hailed the cat’s survival.

“She survived a disaster and still manages to look that cute. She’s the queen of cats.”

With thousands watching her recovery and cheering her on, Satong’s journey from rubble to recovery is fast becoming a feel-good story the nation didn’t know it needed.

And while only one lucky household will get to adopt the little survivor, her story is inspiring others to consider rescuing, not shopping, for their next furry friend.
