Thailand braces for thunderstorms and high waves

Northern terrain faces increased landslide risk amid continuous downpours

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning, forecasting thunderstorms across Thailand, with the north being the most affected region, experiencing storms in 60% of the area. The Andaman Sea may see waves up to 2 metres high.

The weather forecast for the next 24 hours indicates continued thunderstorms due to the southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, coupled with a weak monsoon trough passing through upper Myanmar and Laos into a low-pressure area in northern Vietnam.

Mariners in the upper Andaman Sea are advised to exercise caution due to moderate winds and waves reaching 1 to 2 metres, increasing to over 2 metres in stormy areas.

Thunderstorms are expected in the north, particularly in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Tak, and Kamphaeng Phet, with temperatures ranging from 23 to 27°C to 32 to 36°C.

The northeastern region will see thunderstorms in 30% of the area, with main occurrences in Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, and Ubon Ratchathani. Temperatures will range from 24 to 27°C to 33 to 36°C.

In the central region, 30% of the area may experience thunderstorms, particularly in Uthai Thani, Suphan Buri, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Songkhram, and Samut Sakhon, with temperatures between 23 and 27°C and 34 and 36°C.

Weather forecast

The eastern region will have thunderstorms in 40% of the area, mainly in Nakhon Nayok, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat. The Gulf of Thailand will have waves around 1 metre, increasing to over 2 metres in stormy areas. Temperatures will range from 24 to 27°C to 32 to 35°C.

Southern Thailand (east coast) will see thunderstorms in 30% of the area, mainly in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Yala, and Narathiwat, with temperatures between 23 and 25°C and 33 and 36°C. The sea will have waves around 1 metre, increasing in stormy areas.

Southern Thailand (west coast) is forecasted to have storms in 40% of the area, especially in Ranong, Phang Nga, Trang, and Satun, with temperatures from 24 to 26°C to 32 to 34°C. Waves in the Andaman Sea will be 1 to 2 metres, increasing in stormy areas.

Bangkok and surrounding areas will experience thunderstorms in 30% of the area, mostly from afternoon to evening, with temperatures ranging from 26 to 28°C to 33 to 36°C.

Looking ahead, from June 20 to 23, rainfall is expected to increase with heavy falls in some areas, especially in the east and the western coast of the south, due to a shifting monsoon trough and a strengthening southwest monsoon.

Precautions are advised due to the risk of flash floods and runoff, particularly in hilly and low-lying areas. Farmers should take protective measures for their crops.

Mariners in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand should remain cautious and avoid sailing in stormy conditions throughout this period, reported KhaoSod.
