Thailand braces for more floods and storms amid monsoon chaos

Officials warn residents in at-risk zones to stay alert

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a new weather alert warning of widespread storms, flash floods and rough seas across multiple regions.

A low-pressure cell is currently covering upper Myanmar while a strong southwest monsoon is sweeping across the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand. The combined systems are driving thundershowers and strong winds, with isolated heavy downpours expected nationwide.

The TMD warned residents in at-risk areas to stay alert for heavy rainfall and water accumulation, which could trigger flash floods and overflows, particularly in foothills, low-lying zones, and areas near waterways.

The weather forecast from 6pm yesterday, September 30, to 6pm today, October 1, is as follows:

Northern Thailand will see fairly widespread thundershowers with isolated heavy rainfall across Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanulok, Phichit and Phetchabun. Minimum temperatures are forecast at 21 to 25°C, rising to daytime highs of 28 to 32°C. Winds will be variable at 10 to 25 km/h.

In the Northeast, fairly widespread thundershowers and isolated heavy rain are expected in Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani and Chaiyaphum. Temperatures will range between 23 and 25°C at night and 30 to 33°C during the day, with southwesterly winds at 10 to 25 km/h.
