Thailand braces for heavy rain and storms across 42 provinces

Flash flood threats loom as landslide risks surge

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a weather forecast warning for today, May 29, predicting heavy rainfall in 42 provinces across Thailand, with thunderstorms expected in 70% of Bangkok. Residents are urged to be cautious of potential flash floods and landslides.

The weather forecast for the next 24 hours indicates significant rainfall in the north and northeast regions. Residents in these areas should be wary of the heavy rains and accumulated precipitation, which may lead to flash flooding, landslides, and swollen streams, particularly in hilly terrains and low-lying agricultural areas.

Farmers are advised to improve drainage systems in their fields to mitigate potential impacts on crops and livestock due to the monsoon trough crossing the north and northeast, alongside moderate southwesterly monsoon winds over the Andaman Sea, the south, and the Gulf of Thailand.

In the upper Andaman Sea, waves are expected to reach heights of approximately 2 metres, while in the lower Andaman Sea, waves are anticipated to be between 1 and 2 metres. Thunderstorm areas may experience waves exceeding 2 metres.

Mariners in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand should navigate with caution and avoid stormy areas. Small vessels in the upper Andaman Sea are advised to remain ashore for the time being.

A low-pressure system over the northern Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify, moving towards the coasts of Bangladesh and India without directly impacting Thailand.
