Thailand braces for extreme heat and thunderstorms

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) predicts exceptionally hot weather throughout Thailand, with thunderstorms anticipated in 34 provinces today, April 22. Northern regions may see temperatures reaching up to 40°C. Residents across the country are advised to take precautions against the intense heat and potential storms.
The TMD highlights that low pressure due to heat is affecting the upper part of Thailand, with southerly and southwesterly winds contributing to the weather conditions. Thunderstorms and gusty winds are anticipated in 28 provinces, while the southern region, influenced by southeasterly winds, will also see some rain.
The Andaman Sea is experiencing waves up to 1 metre high, increasing to over 2 metres in stormy areas. Mariners in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea are advised to avoid sailing in storm-prone areas. Dust accumulation is moderate to high in the north and northeast due to mild to moderate winds.
The weather forecast from 6am today to 6am tomorrow indicates that the north will see generally hot conditions, with some areas experiencing extremely high temperatures. Thunderstorms will affect 10% of the region, particularly in provinces such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Nan, and Tak. Temperatures will range from a low of 23 to 27°C to a high of 36 to 40°C, with southwesterly winds at 5 to 15 kilometres per hour.
Northeastern Thailand will also be generally hot, with thunderstorms in 10% of the area, especially in Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, and Surin. Temperatures will range from 23 to 27°C to 37 to 39°C, with southwesterly winds at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
In the central region, the weather will be hot, with some areas experiencing extreme heat and thunderstorms affecting 10% of the area, notably in Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, and Ratchaburi. Temperatures will range from 24 to 27°C to 38 to 40°C, with southerly winds at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.

The eastern region will see hot weather with thunderstorms covering 20% of the area, especially in Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat. Temperatures will range from 25 to 27°C to 33 to 37°C, with southerly winds at 10 to 30 kilometres per hour. Sea waves remain below 1 metre but rise above 2 metres during thunderstorms.
In southern Thailand (east coast), hot weather with thunderstorms is expected in 20% of the area, mainly in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. Temperatures will range from 24 to 26°C to 33 to 36°C, with southeasterly winds at 10 to 30 kilometres per hour. The sea will have waves below 1 metre, increasing to over 2 metres during thunderstorms.
For the southern region (west coast), hot weather with thunderstorms is expected in 30% of the area, particularly in Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang, and Satun. Temperatures will range from 24 to 27°C to 32 to 36°C, with southeasterly winds at 15 to 30 kilometres per hour. Sea waves will reach about 1 metre, rising to over 2 metres during stormy conditions, reported KhaoSod.
Bangkok and its vicinity will experience generally hot conditions with thunderstorms affecting 10% of the area. Temperatures will range from 27 to 29°C to 36 to 38°C, with southerly winds at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
