Heavy rain warning for 44 provinces in Thailand

Typhoon threat looms as saturated ground heightens flood risks

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning for heavy rain across 44 provinces, with particularly intense rainfall expected to cover 70% of northeastern Thailand. Residents are advised to be cautious of flash floods and forest runoff while attention is drawn to Typhoon Podul.

The weather forecast for the next 24 hours highlights heavy rainfall in the north, northeast, east, and the western coast of southern Thailand. People in these regions are urged to remain vigilant due to the risk of heavy and accumulated rainfall that could lead to flash floods and forest runoff, especially in hilly areas near watercourses and low-lying areas.

This weather pattern is influenced by a monsoon trough passing over northern Laos and northern Vietnam, combined with a strengthening southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.

In the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, strong winds are predicted. The upper Andaman Sea is expected to have waves about 2 metres high, with areas experiencing thunderstorms seeing even higher waves.

The lower Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand are expected to have waves 1 to 2 metres high, with thunderstorms resulting in higher waves. Mariners in these regions are advised to exercise caution and avoid sailing in areas with thunderstorms.

Typhoon Podul, located in the Pacific Ocean, is anticipated to move past Taiwan and make landfall on the eastern coast of China between August 13 and August 14. The typhoon is not expected to enter Thailand.
