Heavy monsoon rains forecasted for 36 provinces in Thailand
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warned of heavy monsoon rains in 36 provinces, with precipitation expected to cover 60 to 70% of the areas. The public is advised to remain cautious of potential flash floods and mountain runoff, particularly in low-lying areas and near waterways.
The forecast for the next 24 hours indicates that the upper northern and northeastern regions will experience very heavy rainfall in certain areas. Meanwhile, the central, eastern, and southern regions will have heavy rain in some locales.
This warning comes as the monsoon trough passes over the upper northern region and upper Laos, reaching a low-pressure system over northern Vietnam. Additionally, the southwest monsoon continues to cover the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.
The Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are expected to have waves about 1 metre high, with higher waves in areas experiencing thunderstorms. The department advises sailors to avoid these regions during stormy conditions.
From 6am today, August 20, to 6am tomorrow, northern Thailand will have thunderstorms covering 70% of the area, with very heavy rain in some parts of Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Tak, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun provinces. Temperatures will range from 24 to 27 degrees Celcius at the lowest to 29 to 36°C at the highest, with southwest winds blowing at 5 to 15 kilometres per hour.
In the northeastern region, thunderstorms will cover 70% of the area, with very heavy rain in some parts of Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Kalasin, and Mukdahan provinces. Temperatures will range from 24 to 27°C at the lowest to 30 to 36°C at the highest, with southwesterly winds blowing at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
Thunderstorms
Central Thailand will experience thunderstorms covering 60% of the area, with heavy rain in some parts of Lopburi and Saraburi provinces. Temperatures will range from 24 to 26°C at the lowest to 34 to 36°C at the highest, with southwesterly winds blowing at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
The eastern region will have thunderstorms covering 60% of the area, with heavy rain in some parts of Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Chanthaburi, and Trat provinces. Temperatures will range from 25 to 28°C at the lowest to 33 to 36°C at the highest, with southwest winds blowing at 15 to 30 kilometres per hour. The sea will have waves about 1 metre high, with higher waves in areas experiencing thunderstorms.
In the southern region (East Coast), thunderstorms will cover 60% of the area, with heavy rain in some parts of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Yala, and Narathiwat provinces. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26°C at the lowest to 34 to 37°C at the highest, with southwest winds blowing at 15 to 30 kilometres per hour. The sea will have waves about 1 metre high, with higher waves in areas experiencing thunderstorms.
The southern region (West Coast) will have thunderstorms covering 60% of the area, with heavy rain in some parts of Krabi, Trang, and Satun provinces. Temperatures will range from 24 to 26°C at the lowest to 31 to 33°C at the highest, with southwesterly winds blowing at 15 to 30 kilometres per hour. The sea will have waves about 1 metre high, with higher waves in areas experiencing thunderstorms.
Bangkok and its vicinity will experience thunderstorms covering 60% of the area. Temperatures will range from 25 to 27°C at the lowest to 34 to 36°C at the highest, with southwesterly winds blowing at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour, reported KhaoSod.
