This is how to apply to extend your visa in Bangkok

Thaiger deals

If your visa lapsed since March this year, and you are currently under the amnesty grace period that expires on September 26 (this Saturday), you will need to schedule an appointment online with the Immigration Division 1 at Mueang Thong Thani in Bangkok (a temporary immigration office near Don Mueang Airport) . Other regional areas will likely require you to make an appointment as well. Contact them before you just go to the offices and expect them to attend to your visa immediately.

You will need…

  • Online appointment with Immigration Division 1
  • Passport
  • TM 6 Departure Card
  • 1,900 Baht fee for short term extension
  • Letter from embassy specifically stating inability to leave Thailand due to lack of repatriation flights and or a high risk of contracting Covid-19 in one’s home nation, or because of your current health (which will also need a medical certificate).
  • Portrait photo to affix to short term extension application 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm in dimension
  • US Embassy letter request can be made online HERE. (The British and Australian Embassies have also said they will provide supportive letters for their citizens that can indicate why they need to stay in Thailand.)

This whole thing is really baffling. I understand not wanting to grant some sort of blanket long-term amnesty to everyone. But not allowing people who can prove they have sufficient funds to apply for that new visa for a longer term stay just doesn’t make sense. The main concern with letting people in is fear they will have covid. These people are already here and have been for months. They normally get 10s of millions of tourists…150,000 plus clearly wouldn’t be putting any sort of burden on the system or resources, and I am sure many of them are supporting lots of smaller hotels and restaurants/food stalls. As a digital nomad who loves Thailand I hope sometime soon, people like us may be considered for those long stay visas. Ideally with no quarantine ,or if we had to, only if they changed the pricing on them. No matter how long I could stay after, I wouldn’t spend thousands of dollars to be locked up for two weeks no matter how nice the hotel is. The only way I would pay what they are charging is if I absolutely needed to get into the country. I imagine that is the case for most people staying in those places now and probably has something to do with the ridiculous prices. I found the one listing of ASQ’s quite amusing as they all described the stuff they were close to and you could do nearby…you can’t leave your room!
